Question:
I work at a computer terminal several hours a day. My eyes are often sore and tired, I believe as a result of all this close work. I love my job, but could this irreversibly damage my eyes? Is there anything to do to support the health of my eyes nutritionally?
Answer: Yours is not an uncommon complaint. If you truly love your job there are several precautions you must take to prevent damage to your vision. First of all, every fifteen minutes find something in the distance to focus on for 15 to 20 seconds. This will help keep your eye muscles and lens flexible. Secondly, I would recommend taking bilberry extract.
Bilberries (European blueberries) have been known to improve vision and prevent eye fatigue for a long time. During World War II, Royal Air Force pilots consumed extracts of bilberries to nourish their eyes and improve vision, especially night vision. After the war, scientific investigation demonstrated bilberry components exert remarkable effects on eye structures. As a result of this research, bilberry extracts have been used extensively in Europe to promote healthy eyes and to prevent eye strain for decades.
The beneficial effects of bilberry are due to the flavonoid components known as anthocyanosides. For best results, I recommend taking extracts concentrated to contain 25% of these compounds at dose of 80 mg three times daily.
